My colleague based in Romania needs to provide a concrete design project to a foreign beneficiary and asked me for the technical English names of drawings/documents that will form the submittal.

She speaks English (very) well, but she is afraid the terms and the names of documents/drawing she knows are not “truly” English.

I need, if possible a list of drawings (only their names e.g site plan, GA) from a Concrete Structure Design and the names of the text documents with technical terms. For example design calculations and specifications.

Romanian projects contain: drawings and texts (the text :”memoriu de structura”, meaning the description, calculation of the project). This for example would have an equivalent English term.

Can anyone help by offering what they consider would form the index page of a structural design to be submitted to a western benificiary in english.

We would be quite happy to help your colleague with what they need but as you can appreciate its virtually impossible to provide translations without knowing what the drawings/specifications are for. If your colleague could provide some more info then we could assist. I guess the only way to go about it is to be contacted by them. If this is of interest I can provide you with a temporary email through which we can be contacted . This will only be valid for a few days and deleted as for obvious reasons we do not publish our official email address.

thanks xxpegasus but a translation is not needed. The requirement is to provide a design to a foreign (english language beneficiary) the design is done to international standards so the only thing required is to name the documents in technically correct english and put the submission together in a recognised format.

Yes, I understand what is required, "translation" was the wrong word I guess. I just meant that to index drawings and provide titles one would need to have an idea of what the drawings are for. For example, you only mentioned a concrete design project. Industrial? commercial? residential? multistorey? frame type? floors? concrete slabs? composite? roofs? foundation type? reinforcement details etc? Its impossible to provide an index of drawings without knowing what the drawings refer to.

You may wish to look up the CI/SfB index guide which gives a system of titling/labelling drawings broken down into categories of Location, schedule, assembly and component.

xxpegasus11 thank you for your post. I looked up CI/SfB on the net, found some interesting results but I didn't find my answer.

I think all that is required is some form of list which sets out the correct technical terms for each part of the design and perhaps puts them into a recognised order. For example:

1. Introduction

2. Design Brief

3. Appendix A Design Calculations
xxxx
xxxx
xxxx
4. Appendix B Drawings
Site Plan
General Arrangement
Reinforcing Steel

5. Appendix C Specification

That was my reather feeble attempt. But the point is that the design is done and all that is left is to put it into an order and with headings that a non-Romanian would find to be logical and professional

You could try looking at the National Structural Concrete Specification for Building Construction (ISBN 0 7210 1571 9) published by the British Cement Association along with its associated guidance notes.

It not only provides data as per a specification but is sets out project specific information, information to be submitted to the Specialist Concrete Contractor (SCC) by the designer, and information to be submitted by the SCC to the Engineer.

It is a UK document but may give you some guidance.

Ussuri thanks for the post. I've ordered the book (GBP 25 seems good value) What a guy will do to impress a Romanian lady....... Any other advice of course welcome.
