Hi everyone,

Has anyone heard of a ground bearing RC raft constructed on top of reclyced PVC crates(like the ones used for water attenuation)
The raft will have superimposed loads from machinery and storage(it is the base slab of a self storage warehouse)
Looking at the datasheet for SDS Geolight it looks feasible
1.6% deformation @ 400kPa is not bad. For 1m high crates this would result in 16mm @ 400kPa
The raft will only need about 50kPa including self weight so that is about 2.5mm deformation.

Apparently, the subject material is for modular storm water infiltration system . If you look to the web

It has been proposed for the surfaces ....(Constructed in a modular format, SDS GEOlight® systems can be used under a range of surfaces including grass, porous and standard paving, tarmac and concrete...)

I have two objections if infiltration is allowed rather than storage ;
- Stormwater hardness can be classified as soft and will be detrimental for the subsoil .( limestone, clay ..will dissolve and wash ) and longtherm settlements would be expected..

- Infiltration probably would not be uniform and local gullies may develop together with sinkholes ,

Another concern is the aging of recycled PVC due to weathering and becoming brittle .

I will suggest you to post this thread at Geotechnical Eng. forum .
