I am a New Zealand engineer employed by a switchboard manufacturer and component supplier.

We have been approached by a customer with a US-based parent company, and they wish to specify US-spec RCDs/GFCIs in an aircraft maintenance installation here.

One issue that is not clear is the specification of 'electronic tripping'. We in NZ use RCDs that have a combination of electronics and mechanical contacts in the tripping mechanism, but we are told that this is 'electromechanical' and is not the same as the American 'electronic' mechanism.

Can anyone please either explain the differences, or point me in the direction of something that does?

And yes, I have googled this first and drawn a blank.

Thanks,

Mark Monson
