I need to find an approximate cost for a concrete structure that is to be build underground as a burial site for low level nuclear waste. I have all the dimensions of the structure. Does anyone know a quick method to use that would yield an estimate of the overall cost of structure and construction? Krausa

Here are some things to consider in your cost estimate:

1. Type of Structure. The "vault" you are considering is for a very unusal storage problem. I'm sure that there are code issues regarding thickness of concrete, reinforcing, radiation protection etc. that will add significantly to the cost.

2. Site Conditions. Is the site accessable? Can construction equipment be brought to the site easily or do you have to build a road into the site first?

3. Soil Conditions. What is the soil type, can it be excavated or is it rock and has to be blasted? What can you do with the excavated material, how far is the waste site to dispose of it? What about fill materials, how far is the borrow site to haul it in? Is water a problem at the site (with nuclear storage, you need to find a different site).

4. Concrete Materials. What type of concrete, how much concrete, do you set a batch plant up at the site? How much reinforcing? What type of formwork, how do you plan to handle the formwork and concrete placing, cranes, etc.?

5. Labor Conditions. Where is the site, do you bring in the laborers to do the work and provide housing for them? Is the local labor force available and trained to do this type of work? What are the local wage rates and work rules?

For a rough budget, after answering these questions, you can "ballpark" some unit prices for the various parts of the job. In the midwest of the U.S. the following are ranges of cost for "normal" construction. Your project is NOT normal and the costs COULD be 2-3 times or more higher. Costs also are very dependant on the total quantity of materials involved, the more the quantity, the lower the cost (generally).

Excavation: Earth $8.00-$18.00/cy; Rock $50.00-$200.00/cy

Concrete (including formwork & rebar): $300.00-$1,750.00/cy depending on what type of structural element.

Get as much cost information from local material suppliers and contractors as you can. I would also try to talk to someone familier with the type of construction methods you plan to use.

Hope this is some help.
