Last week a representative from my local water utility company came by to read my water meter. I was curious as to why my bill was so high so i decided to talk to him. I asked him how is it that such a small family uses so much water and if he was reading my meter correctly.

He assured me that he was reading it correctly and i can read the meter for myself. I told him i didn't have the time to do that and he told me that it wouldn't take long.

It actually took less than three minutes and in the process i discovered that i had a water meter leak ( which may have contributed to the high bill).

The long and short of this message is that reading your water meter is very important. If you want to learn how to do it you can visit

A leak in the meter itself will not add to your bill
the chamber is gasketed to the outlet of the meter so any leak will be of un-metered water.
If you have a high bill check your toilet, that is the most common source of leaks. put food coloring into the tank wait up to 30 minutes and verify the color does not enter the bowl until you flush it. It is common for the flapper to not seal up correctly.
