Reading Autocad File Details

On a programming level (C++, etc.), I want to read items from the autocad drawing to import other applications sharing the data, to save re-entry time. This would be separate and external to autocad. Does anyone know where the autocad database details are available. Would this require a certain autocad file format?

If you really want to try analysing DWG files then you should probably start at the Open Design Alliance
