Recently, we experienced many times hydrogen compressor of VRDS unit. This compressor is triple stages reciprocating type. 1st/2nd/3rd stage normal pressure is about 45/100/200 Kg/cm2.
Before the trouble, above compressor operation condition is as follows.
After the compressor start up, 1st & 2nd stage pressure was contiually increasing and fluctuating only a few hours. And before along, 1st/2nd stage spill back valves were opened gradually, it ended up full opened.

Compressor cylinder was overhauled, piston ring/rider ring was all breakaged. But we checked lubricator and alignment, correct parts assembly status before start up. According to piston ring/rider ring's vendor inspection, its material is normal.

So, if you guys know the reason, anybody who experience this kind of trouble, please let us share information for the solution.

sudden pressure changes and/or excessive cylinder pressure are known to cause piston ring failures in combustion engines. were your piston rings made of metal or another material? if metal, did you inspect the fracture surface to determine the type of fracture?
