Its a few years since i finshed my HNC and ive been less than mentally stimulating maintenance work since, ive just had a job change that warrants remembering some of the relevant stuff that i learnt at college.
drives, power calculatons, harmonics etc which i remember understanding quite well at the time
anyone reccomend any good books or webites for a refresher preferably aimed at technician level
cheers

The books that you used in school might not be designed for refresher use, but some of them may work well for that purpose since you learned from them originally. If you no longer have them and wish you did, try eBay.

I'm assuming you are in the UK (do they have HNCs anywhere else?) Edward Hughes "Electrical Technology" is a good start although there isn't anything on drives in my sixth edition. It is occasionally seen on ebay, also there are second-hand copies of the 7th edition on the UK Amazon for quite reasonable prices.

I also like "Advanced Electrical Engineering" by Shepherd, Morton and Spence but it is quite old and out of print I think.

If you are looking for a book on motors and drives from an IEC viewpoint, my clear favourite is "European Electric Motors, Drives and Controls" by Dr D G Searle. It is packed full with very practical information, very few equations. But it's expensive, definitely worth borrowing though e.g. it is in the IEE library in London, if you are a member you can borrow it through the post.
