Hi All,

Please give your best recommendation on materials (literature, presentations, online pdfs, etc.) to begin with Composite FEA, e.g. FRP design/damage and acceptance criteria, fibre reinforced thermoset composites. Preferably for marine industry, but other experiences are also welcomed. Please note I am advanced with FEA linear and nonlienar (shell, solids, beams etc.) analysis prior to steel structural/mechanical design.

Thanks!

Hi,
I would suggest to get yourself familiarized with Composite Stress Analysis & Sizing theory first i.e. properties of composites, macromechanics, failure criteria, design considerations etc. Any text book should get your started. For me, I found it easier to go through Mechanics of Composite Materials- Arthur K Kaw - 2nd Edition followed by Mechanics of Composite Materials 2nd Edition - RM Jones. These two books sort of gave me the theoretical foundation necessary to build up further. From here on, there are various small free tutorials available for FEA program of your choice. If you are a Nastran user, check out tutorials by appliedcax for Femap. They have put out a free whitepaper on composite laminate modeling using Femap. I know there are tutorials available on Youtube for Abaqus & perhaps ANSYS as well. Further, I cannot emphaize the need to refer to FEA documentation to get a hang on nomenclature, modeling procedure etc. Remember, the physics is same in pretty much any FEA program...only how you represent the variables may differ from one other.

Hope the above helps.
