Good evening.

I am trying to find a structural engineer's "pocket book" for quick references and said rules of thumb. Does anyone have a recommendation on a book?

Cheers.

Personally, as your journey through the field of structural engineering progresses you should be developing your own "rules of thumb". This is because "rules of thumb" will be so dependent on local construction practice.

Or, if you have an iphone you can set a link to faq507-1574.

For post-tensioned slabs use span/40.

nineninenine beat me to it.

Though mostly UK based it is a very useful book in general.

There have also bee a few articles on steelwork rules of thumb in the US magazines.

Other books are peter hunts structural notebook and the Arups structural scheme design guide (if you can get your hands on it).
