recommended flow

I had a hand written copy from an old process man that had on it the recommend range of fps for both steam and hydrocarbons. Very handy but I haven't been able to find it lately. I was wondering if anybody out there can supply me with this information.

It has been great number of years, but if my memory is correct, for line sizing:

(1) 7 ft/s for liquids (including hydrocarbon liquids) unless it a pump suction line, then you may want to use a lower velocity.

(2) Anywhere from 40 to 80 ft/s for gases (including steam)

But there is so much software available for line sizing these days ... why use rules of thumb?

Software doesn't always know its limitations. I'm sure most of the online calculators, for example, are perfectly happy with allowing me to have 120 ft/sec in a gas line.
