I am trying to locate any other references available other than using the MUTCD, AASHTO, and "sound engineering judgement" for minimum signal spacing guidelines (with field conditions consisting of a 8% downgrade within 500 ft from an upstream signal). Thanks for your help in advance!

Signal spacing affects speed and progression, and progression effects LOS. The closer signalized intersections are, the more difficult it is to provide progressive movement between them. The minimum recommended spacing for an arterial roadway is 1/4 mile. Sometimes you can't avoid closely spaced signals, but you do pay in reduced LOS, and you have to be careful about queues.

that's all I can come up with at the moment

if your intersections are less than 1000', it may be practical to consider using a single controller to manage both intersections. this way you can always maintain full coordination of all movements. the use of double clearance overlaps will be helpful if you don't have adequate storage between intersections
