They are only guides to be used when conditions are known and the match the preload needed for you application. If you are not familiar with bolting go to a site like: http://www.boltscience.comThey have an excellent tutorial on bolted joints. I would recommend getting familiar with fasteners and bolted joints. If you are familiar with the process of bolting here is a site that has several calculators available on line. http://www.martindalecenter.com/Calculators4_2_MechSZ.html#MECH-TOR Go down to Torque and you will see several calculators the may be benefical.
