I'm looking to benchmark records retention policies and best practices from comparable industries in order to determine how to better implement my company's retention policy and tools.

Areas I'm looking for in order to compare notes as well as be directed to areas I can further research on my own:
1) Any MIL-, STANAG-, or ISO-standards that you use to drive requirements for record retention above and beyond contractual requirements?
2) If not driven by an external requirement, what is the average time you maintain records for manufacturing (build records), environment, safety, quality, email, customer/vendor communications, etc?
3) How do you manage document archives? For example, how often do you refile CAD data or Documents (MS Word) in order to make sure archive data is still accessible with the latest software? What steps to verify the integrity of the data after refile?
