Recreate part model from a script or journal? 1

Pro/E has these files called trail files, which is my understanding that you can play them back to recreate a part model from scratch. If I have a detailed part model in NX 6, is there a way to save off some creation script that I can then take and replay in a new blank part file to recreate the geometry?

If you have a part file you like, why not just export it to a new part. If you only want certain parts of it you can make UDF's or save portions to the reuse library.

I have heard of taking a syslog file and using it as a macro of sorts to help recover geometry from a crashed session (I've never done this myself).

Technically the session's 'syslog' file, if the .txt extension is changed to .macro, can be played back as a macro. However, some editing may be needed since you may have opened other files during the session and so all of the files would have to be available in the folders they were opened from and so on, unless you were able to edit out all reference to them from the 'syslog'. Also the macro will generally only playback successfully on the system where it was originally created.

Now if your problem is that someone accidentally deleted a file which was previously created without any errors, there's a good chance that the session's 'syslog' is no longer on the system. The out-of-the-box setting is to ONLY save syslogs which there were software errors during the session. If the session ran without any errors or there were only minor warning messages, these files are NOT automatically saved. However, you can change a setting which will keep ALL syslogs (look for 'UGII_KEEP_SYSTEM_LOG=yes' in the env file and uncomment it), but you'll be responsible for cleaning them out of the temp directory manually.

Thanks for your comments. Export part reminded me that I can also just import a part to achive what I wanted. Purpose it to make some quick demonstration videos to show working in PLM instead of native. I wanted to create a new model in PLM and then instead of quickly generating a primitive or something simple that is not realistic, I wanted the perhaps playback the creation of a complex part quickly (that would look really cool).

If that's what you're looking for, you may wish to look at (if you're running at least NX 6.0) 'Feature Replay' (it has its own toolbar which you can toggle ON using 'Customize'). It uses 'VCR' type controls to play models forward and backward, either one feature at a time or you can set an 'Automatic Feature Replay' where you set the number of seconds between each 'step' and then it plays back like a 'movie' and you can watch the model being rebuilt one feature at a time. If you have a Spaceball, you can pan and zoom the model while it's playing-back.
