Rectangular nozzle under external loads

Dear gents,

I have a rectangular nozzle welded to a circular shell and our client asked to us to verify the nozzle shell junction under external loads and if a reinforcing pad is necessary with ASME code.
The problem is that the nozzle is rectangular and I don t have code rules for this type of application.
Does someone have faced this case and can help me please?

Ehiman1, nozzle reinforcement calculations can be performed per Code rules. WRC 107 is capable of analyzing rectangular attachments for external loads.

If your design does not meet the limitation in either I'd guess you are left with FEA.

Like Mike said, FEA is a good tool for looking at both the nozzle and shell stresses. WRC can be used but will only look at the shell stresses. However, this FEA doesn't lend itself well to plate models as the sharp corners on the nozzle produce stress singularities. This exact problem has caused me a few headaches over the years.
