Rectangular pressure vessel design

Hi there,

I need to find design criteria for rectangular pressure vessels, anyone who could recommend me id appreciate it.

I want to make a gas water heater with a rectangular water tank, around 180 psi design pressure.

If theres a specific ASME code or design software please let me know.

Restrell, I am not going to recommend any particular software, but if you design to ASME Sec VIII Div 1, Appendix 13 will be relevant.

You're not going to like the results, I predict.

Vessels containing water can be exempted from Sec VIII, Div 1 under some circumstances.

It should be said that Code design requires relevant experience and fabrication must be done by a certified shop for the vessel to be stamped.

You might want to hire the whole thing out.

There is a reason why you don’t see many rectangular shaped pressure vessels, and that’s because that is an absolutely crappy shaped or volume for containing a pressure of any magnitude. You must have a very serious reason for wanting to do this, because this type (shape) of vessel is fraught with difficulties in the design and building, which do not exist when the tank is a nice clean volume of revolution.

It all depends on the size of the vessel. On a very small unit its possible to build a water htr. If a larger unit its not economic to do so. The right Code is ASME sect. IV and it goes to 160 psi. Max.

basically you will have to find the membrane and bending stresses throughout and compare to the code allowable stress.
It is fairly easy to make a spreadsheet for the design according to appendix 13 but PV Elite has this module
