how do i get references from my employers and co-workers for registration in another state without them thinking something's fishy? or am i SOL?

Ask them flat-out. If they ask why, tell 'em that you want to expand the business!

I agree, just ask. It's not unusual at all to be registered in multiple states. I would think they would be look at it as an advantage (they should anyway).

Get registered in your home state, then get a Council Record Book through NCEES. That way, the references are generic, not for a specific state. It's still apparent that this would be for registration elsewhere, but less blatant & specific. It's for use "if I get registered somewhere sometime".

From a practical standpoint, if you are ever going to be registered in two other states, the Council Record Book is worth it- saves re-doing the references for each state.
