Referencing holes on one part by hole's axis on second part

Here is the problem:
Part B mounts on part A. The final position of part B relative to part A is not known yet. I do know position of mounting holes of part B (they can change also), but since I do not know part's B final position relative to part A, every time I move/rotate part B, I have to match mounting holes on part A for part B. I decided to make holes on part A that references axis of holes on part B, so when I move part B, holes on part A follow every change. Also, if I change number of holes on part B that change is reflected on part A (using pattern).
I make holes on part A in assy mode, part A active.
Is this a good way of designing?

One more thing. I work with the BASIC Pro/E module. Skeleton is out of question or any "advanced" technique.

You might run into a problem if you need to open up just part A without loading the assembly or part B into memory, since they are now parents of that hole feature.

Skeletons or copy geoms would be the best way to avoid this, but since it's not an option, this may be the best way for you to do it for now. Like I said, as long as it's not a problem for you to load up the assembly and mating part while making drawings, etc, you should be okay.

When I open the part A without opening part B nor assembly, everything is still there. No problems at all. There is a yellow sign saying "Model for a variable reference pattern is missing". Even drw files are just fine.

Hmm.. Maybe they've changed something.. Does it still work when you regen the model? If so, I'm impressed.

Yes. Everything works. Sometimes, I have to regen assembliy manually for holes to regen into new location.
