For a given ideal refrigeration cycle with an evaporator temperature of -20 deg C and condenser temperature of 40 deg C, what is responsible for the COP differences between R-12, R-22, and R-410A? After setting it up in EES, I get COPs of 3.174, 3.149, and 2.915, respectively. I am trying to understand what it is about the thermophysical properties of R-12 that make it a better choice (efficiency-wise) than the other two in this particular cycle. This question is purely theoretical.

The fluid properties (temperatures, enthalpy, pressures) at what the refrigerant condenses/evaporates determine COP. Obvioulsy their chemical composition and the forces between molecules are responsible for that.

You probably know this book if you use EES. I'm glad more people using EES. Is this a homework by any chance? Are you at UW MAdison by any chance?
