Hi guys-

Would somebody know why a refrigerant moniter would affect boiler operation?

thanks-

Some refrigerants will break-down and form toxic gases when exposed to high temperature or flame.

For instance, R-22 will in part break-down to form phosgene gas.

And other refrigerants are more dense than air, thus displacing it, potentially snuffing out a flame, allowing raw fuel to enter the combustion chamber (although the flame safety systems should prevent this).

Nice MintJulep---

Thank you for your insight,,, I think that will do for answer.

Thanks once again!

One of the problems with this profession when I was a young service mechanic(back in the mid 60's) was the lack of safty precuutions taken to protect us from situations that are now considered dangerious. I have been exposed to phosgene gas, asbestos, and chromates used to treat water towers. I have lost some hearing due to noisey compressor rooms while overhauling compressors. Did it affect me? you bet. Had a liver transplant 9 years ago, doing fine now:>)All this happened while working for various contractors but things got much better when I went to work for the County of Los Angeles where they stressed safety and provided all the safety equipment.

I understand, I've been a woodworker most of my life and I always wore a respirator, safety glasses and a good set of around ear, ear protection. It was not always so comfortable on hot days and a bunch of my co-workers gave me crap at first but it was well worth it in the long run.

Some of the glues they use in particle board and MDF along with some of the more exotic wood species can work a number on your eyes and lungs with long term exposure.

Sure I looked like a geek wearing all of my safety gear but I still have my hearing, vision, lungs and all 10 digits after 20 years in the trade.

This is a great profession and very challanging, I wish you well and hope you find that you made the right choice because I know I have

Denver Colo. City code says that if a refrigeration system could possible dump it's charge or develope a leak that could find it's way to an open flame the refrigerant monitor must be wire so as to shut down the open flame appliance in the event of a large level leak/spill.

This can add considerable expense to a project if it's over looked in the intial planning stages.

I'm not a real engineer, but I play one on T.V.
