Contact the Florida Engineer's Board (or whatever state you plan to take the test in). State's have different requirements.

No matter what your university, you still have to take two tests: FE (fundamentals of engineering) and PE (SE is the same level of exam, meant for an experienced professional). FE is very general, PE is more specific. FE can be taken when you have zero experience, PE requires some years (depending on state, but generally 4 years) experience. It's important to document experience carefully and keep track of your references! (I found this to be the most difficult, locating present location of past managers).

I agree with JAE, first place to start is the Florida Board of Engineers.

some state boards of registration give up to one year of equivalent experience for a PhD, but it depends on the university and the state.

When you contact the Florida board, they will send you a package for your application that spells it all out.

First you need to pass the EIT (FE) exam, although I have heard some states have permitted a PhD in lieu of the EIT exam.

You will need 4 years of experience that another P.E. will attest to for your application.

You will need to get certifications from India regarding your engineering education credentials. This will be expensive because they will likely have to include translated copies of your transcripts and curriculum, in addition to your degree specifics.

With all this, you will be able to apply to take the PE exam.

In some places, such as my own state, you also have to obtain a certificate of profeciency in English. We had a fellow from Columbia, a hell of a nice guy, that had to go through all this and maintain his immigration stuff at the same time.

Talk to your professers in Florida. They should be able to help you understand the process. Unless you are very old, and I wouldn't think so from your post, getting your PE is worth the trouble. Good Luck.

My spelling is probably horrid, so please excuse my shortcomings.

In California, 3 years of experience after obtaining a P.E. in Civil is a prerequisite to sit for the S.E. exam. Florida may have similar requirements.

State board may not count all years of college education obtained outside of the United States. Again, it is at the discretion of the board.
