I have a deep beam which is 6 ft deep and is supporting a uniform load. The beam will be simply supported. What is the best and most time efficient way to design this beam? I wanted to try and avoid the strut and tie method.

Thanks

T.

What's the span? If it really is a deep beam, then you should probably use a strut-and-tie model. "Prestressed Concrete Structures" by Collins and Mitchell (they do strut-and-tie models for both RC and PT in that book) is the best resource that I've come across on this topic.

Your code may limit you on what is an acceptable method of analysis and design. ACI provides guidance on this for instance, requiring the designer to account for the nonlinear strain distribution or use a strut-and-tie model. Those then are you two choices. If you don't know how to do one or don't have the tools to do one, then it's pretty obvious what you're left with.

What type of load is this beam carrying?

A 6' deep beam spanning 15' is exceptionally deep.
