Reinforced Concrete Portal Frame - Foundation Design

Hi All,

I have currently completed the deck design of a single span rectangular portal frame bridge structure which is reinforced concrete.

The structural analysis approach I opted for was to model the entire structure in 3D using a grillage analysis to get the force effects to design the deck and portal walls.

My question is when designing the footing, am I correct in assuming the the main reinforcement will be along the length of the support whilst the reinforcement in the transverse direction will be less critical.

Will also appreciate any literature/worked examples on the subject. I have attached two clip of a plan and cross section of the bridge in question.

Any help will be much appreciated.

cheers.

The reinforcement in the bridge longitudinal direction (short footing dimension) will be critical, and the reinforcement in the bridge transverse direction (along the length of the support) will be less so.

I'd recommend reviewing the moment demands in your footing to see why that is the case.

Can you post the deck reinf. sketch ? The skew angle seems substantial and the main rebar should follow the shortest dist. ( Vertical to the bridge abutment walls)
The same reasoning is valid for the footing rebars. Main reinf. vertical to the wall , distribution would be parallel .

EDIT: Pls look to the main rebars and distribution rebars of skew box culvert deck .
