Reinforcement in Existing RCC Slab 1

Hi all!<br>
Are there economical methods for checking the Reinforcement pattern, Size of rebar, cover etc.? These Cover meters are a bit expensive. Does anybody have a cheaper NDT Procedure or equipment. <br>

I don't know of any other method (apart from obtaining the construction drawings). If cost is prohibitive then you could hire the meter as and when it is needed. I believe the likes of Hilti do hiring in the UK.<br>

The requirement is when the Const. drgs are not available. The cover meters do cost app US $2000 onwards. unfortunately, this cost is prohibitive for indians. Do u know some Indian Manufacturers/ Indian suppliers of equipment? Or any agency which can supply in India? Thanks.<br>

I don't know about India, but Hilti are a Worldwide distributor. If they no longer hire out meters a call to them may result in them passing you on to someone who may help. Sorry I have no other ideas. Regards ginger

Our practice in Sydney does use covermeteres quite extensively. We can hire them for about $110 AUS per day. It is noted that we only use covermeters for checking consitency of reinforcing from one area to the other. Yes the meter does give an accurate representation of bar location and a reasonable idea of the cover (if there is only one layer of bars). I am soemwhat dubious about their abiltiy to give an accurate bar size as our experience has shown that they usually give you at least two bar size ranges.<br>

So the most sure way to check existing reo is to get you local concreteor to jack pick or scabble areas of the slab(in the tesion zones) so that you can phisically see and measure the reo. This normally cost us about $45 AUS per hour and dependant on site conditions can normally be complete in a few hours for a simple slab.<br>

Once we have uncovered an area an carried out measurement we will then normally use the covermeter to &quot;proof&quot; check the results that we can see and then use it to check other areas for conformity.
