Hi,

I'm having a problem on how to calculate the flat head with reinforcement plates of a pressure vessel (internal pressure), by EN 13445.
In the first design, we do have a circular flat end with two reinforcement plates, horizontally. How should I calculate the size of these plates and then the thickness of the flat end?
The other design we have is rectangular flat end (for cylindrical vessel) with reinforcement plates. Is this calculated as per "uncircular flat end" or per "circular flat end" as the part that is under pressure is circular, even though the part itself is rectangular?

You are doing a really poor job of describing your problem. We can’t see what you’re looking at from here. Show us some well proportioned sketches of the two schemes with some dimensions, sizes, thicknesses, pressures, loads, etc., to really define your problem. A good engineer will make initial judgements on the situation and direction of possible solutions based on his/her experience, from these sketches. So, insufficient info. or poor proportions can influence the direction of his thinking. And, you have given us nothing. A dozen different pictures could be drawn, all different, but meeting your word picture. Do the corners of the square pl. ends just hang over the outside of the cylinder, why not trim them off? And, how are any stiffeners (reinforcements) oriented and attached? I suspect the circular and square pls. act about the same as relates to the cylindrical shape tank and internal pressure, except for the connection btwn. the two parts, end pls. and cylinder. The overhanging corners on the square pls. will have some stiffening affect on in-plane stresses near the joint btwn. the end pl. and the cylindrical tank.

@ dhengr: again I agree with you
