Does anybody know why the Structrual Welding Code for Reinforcing Steel, AWS D1.4:2005 Section 3.2.2, states that welded lap joints shall be limited to bar sizes No. 6 and smaller?
If eccentricty is addressed in the design of the joint and weld as required in Figure 3.4 within AWS D1.4, I don't understand why welded lap splices would be limited to No. 6 bar and smaller. Would this be a weld limitation or concrete limitation issue?
