Relative View and Round stock!

I have been using relative view for awhile now, and whenever i come to a piece on my assembly that has no straight edges (ie, round bar, or a shaft), i cant import that piece into a drawing without draging in the whole assembly. I can pick the 'cut-off' surface of the shaft for the "first" surface, but SW wont let me select the "second" surface to complete the selection. Is this a known bug???

You have to have a straight edge before relative view will work.

Yeah, I have this problem, too.

Usually, I just orient the model to the end view (select theend face and click the "normal to" view button). Then I add the view to the drawing using "Insert [→] Drawing view [→] Named". If the orientation doesn't match a named view, there is still the option to use the model's current view.

I could be the world's greatest underachiever, if I could just learn to apply myself.

The only thing I can get to work for me is when I zoom right into the end-section of the shaft, and extrude-cut a small, tiny tiny tiny square into the part (which I can hide later), then atleast I can pick a second side to complete the task.
This seems very rudimentary to me...

Would it work to add a sketch with lines to select and orient the view, then hide the sketch?

Yesterday, I added a plane to a part, specifically to get it oriented for drawing purposes.

I clicked on the plane and I clicked the normal-to button. I went to the drawing and I selected the name view, and I clicked back on the model. It worked fine!

The plane is hidden. I am not sure what would happen if I deleted it.

Usually, I use relative view.

I could't get that to work either. I don't know where you see "named view" under the Insert/drawing view/....

In the menu it's INSERT- DRAWING VIEW - MODEL and then picked which "named view" to wish to create.
