relaxation of base metal in accordance QW-423.1 ASME IX Welder qualification 2

hey guys, i think that following my query already available in this Section but it could be not found out, so i do a repeat is can i use P.1 base metal to be qualified a welder with purpose for welding production of P.8, the WPS used for this welder qualification is P.8 WPS. that is why i asked you guys this question because long time ago my client they allowed doing like this.

Actually, i have doubt to, refer QW-301.2, it is mandated a approved WPS presents at the time of welder qualification.

Yes, you can substitute materials as per QW-423.1. "Base Metal used for welder qualification may be substituted for the metal specified in the WPS in accordance with the following Table".

Of course F# is an essential variable.
 
Thank david339933, please confirm my understanding to QW-423.1, this purpose of QW-423.1 was making a range of base material for welder qualification only.

More specifically, please see below to be clarified:

#1: Refer to QW-301.2, it means that during welder qualification, we needed to present a WPS hence the base metal for this welder qualification shall be complied with presented WPS. it mean we can not qualify welder with carbon steel coupon with approved stainless steel WPS.

#2: Refer to QW-423.1, we can qualify welder with CS coupon with present of approved CS WPS and then the qualified range of this welder could be covered for SS welding production.

also everybody please help me to confirm the point of #1 & 2#.
 
QW-423.1 is telling you two different things. One that you can substitute base metals in the WPS for an alternate base metal when qualifying a welder. Two that once qualified with a basemetal on the left of the table, you are also qualified for the basemetals listed on the right side of the table.

#1 is not correct. QW-423.1 tells you that it is acceptable to substitute the base metal in the WPS for an alternate base metal. You can qualify a welder on a carbon steel coupon even though the WPS is for stainless....and vice versa.

#2 is correct, assuming F# is the same. Qualification on P1 qualifies for P1 thru P15F, P34, and P41 thru P49.
 
thank you david339933 & Deepu1692, be related this toppic i have one interesting case for your clarification as follows: the carbon steel (CS) coupon was substituted for initial stainless steel (SS) coupon during qualified the welder by SS-WPS with EXXX(X)‐15 SMAW (F5), but when refer to Table QW-432 the electrode EXXX(X)‐15 used for CS it turned out F4, therefore F# is not satisfied anymore and this purpose is failed. Could you please let me know my understand is correct in this case?

This is referring to the filler metal being austenitic not the basemetal. For example using E410-15 is an F4, while using E316-15 is F5.
 
thank so much david339933, based on the specification and purpose, the both of your example welding rods are for SS, how could i determine what are F4, F5 regarding above?
 
big thank david339933, it's extremely informative.. but you could give me the root core why they can classify the F#, however with the same specification SFA-5.4.
 
F# is based on how the filler metal actually welds. So filler metals which weld similarly are classed into the same F#. If a welder is qualified with an F#4 then he can weld with another F#4 (same process, etc.) because it will weld very similar to the F#4 qualified. It means you don't have to test the welder on every electrode that they may use.

SFA 5.4 is the specification for "stainless steel electrodes for shielded metal arc welding". It is a broad specification and therefore it contains many different F#s.

For example: SFA 5.1 contains - 7024 (F#1), 6010 (F#3), 7018 (F#4), all carbon steel electrodes for shielded metal arc welding.
