Any good reference about the Communication protocols for modern relays. I heard about RS232 and RS485. I need some literature about their applications, advantages and disadvantages.

No school, but during my graduation, this was not the part of my curriculum.

RS-232 was originally defined for teletypes, and has some features that should have remained unique to them. It was adapted for use with computers, and evolved. RS-485 uses balanced lines and works better in noisy environments. Both have been documented to death, but you will get a lot of superfluous hits thanks to their ubiquity. Try "___ definition" with the quotes in any search engine.

Your reference to "modern relays" left me confused, because it could refer to several sorts of devices.

Please elucidate your quest.

Likewise, confused about "Communication protocols for modern relays" unless you're referring to things like CANbus or Profibus

You said protocols, RS232 and RS485 are not a protocols, thay are connection methods.

As far as protocols, I like DNP3.0, or propritory protocols for specific peer to peer communications.
