Does anybody know where any code speaks to the issue of discharging relief valves on an ammonia refrigerant system into the suction side of the compressor? We currently have 3 valves piped in this manner, however I am having a difficult time sourcing replacements for the existing valves, because of this arrangement

Pressure relief valves shall discharge into the low pressure side of the
refrigerating system or to the outside of the building. A pressure relief valve
discharging into the low-pressure side must be of the type that is not affected by
back pressure. If terminating outdoors shall discharge at a location 15 feet above
adjoining ground level not less than 20 feet from any window, ventilating opening
or exit in a building.

imok2,
Thanks for the info. Now, at the risk of appearing as a salesman, do you know of any valves of this type approved for use in Canada? Also, what quality makes a valve "of the type not affected by back pressure"?

imok2,

Very helpful, not only here but wih our apprentices as well. Many thanks.
