I am having a problem with acad 2006. Something has gone bad, giving me garbled text or no text at all.

What dire consequences would occur if I uninstalled and reinstalled the software? Would I lose my drawings?

No it would not affect your drawing files.

You might try a "repair" first.

You will not lose your drawings. They should be saved in a safe place and backed up on tape or CD. Turn off your virus protection before you reinstall. Then reboot your pc when complete.

For "repair" I was refeerring to the option using Windows Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, Change, Repair.

But this is a guess, something to try before a complete reinstall. As ctopher mentions, better to use a repair if available on the install CD.

I have had problems with AutoCAD 2006 having installed some patches in the wrong order. A reinstall took half a day (to get all the right patches in the right order as I'm using C3D too) but gave me marked performance improvements.
