Is it possible to remagnetize a magnet for a lawn mower magneto? This magnet is made of multiple layers of metal.
While removing the flywheel (by pounding with hammer) I believe I have caused the magnet to loose its pull.
The magnet is made up of multiple layers of steel.

Thanks in advance.

Possibly, but generally, the fields required for magnetizing a material are much higher than can be generated without the specialized equipment.

the layers you describe may be the pole pieces not the actual permanent magnets.

Check to make sure that the magnet hasn't shifted from it position. The metal lams are just pole pieces.

Corrosion never sleeps, but it can be slowed down.

you appear to have the type that relies on the residual magnetism in the armature to get started. you can induce a residual if your managed to completely demagnetize it with a small permanet magnet, but you have to test it to make sure you get the polarity right.

it has been some time since working with magnetos, but the problems we had were mostly bad capacitors. the next most common failure was a bas coil followed by misaligned air gaps.
