Removal of 3 Layer Polyethylene on pipeline under water

What is the ramification of removing 3 Layer Polyethylene on pipeline under water (offshore) to accommodate AUT inspection? Is it a common practice? Must the coating be removed to perform AUT inspection?

Most UT I know will account for the thickness of the external coating.

This sounds very odd to me. How are you raising the pipeline off the seabed?

Suppose you are carrying out AUT on overhead insulated piping. You remove the insulation, then do the AUT.
Same logic.

I wouldn't say that it is a common practice to deliberately damage the primary barrier to corrosion, particularly if the line can take ILI. It will be an expensive measure as the stuff doesn't come off easily.

What and why are you doing it?

dhurjati - I don't agree this is the same thing.

3LPE is not designed to be removed and looses most is not all of it's properties of you do. Plus there should be no need.

What does the inspection company say?
