Problem:A carbon steel distillation column'spot has a stainless steel (304L) liner (1/16") to protect the pot from Acedic acid corrosion. The liner was plug welded to the carbon steel shell of the pot. The problem is some of liner have been broken off from the shell and flamable materials have been got to the space between the liner and the shell.
What technique I can use to remove the liner? Are there any contractor that do this kind of services?

Do you have limited access or space restrictions to remove the liner? If not, locally grind the plug welds and extract the liner.

I think his concern is that grinding or burning off the plug welds will start a fire or worse...

You might want to give the following company a call and discuss your problem.

Not knowing the physical layout of your vessel abrasive water jet cutting might be the answer. I would contact Jet Edge and discuss this and see if they could give some guidance or a possible contact with someone who does field work.

IF this liner is only 1/16" thick then these plug welds can't be very large. Also IF there is enough access to get in and deal with this liner (they got it in, I'd guess there's enough room to get it out) I'd go in with a large crow-bar and just pop the liner off the plug welds. Only problem I see (if at all) the liner would not fair well with this procedure ...IF that was a concern? ...Good Luck

Note: The vessel is 10ft OD, and water cut may cut through the liner and shell also.
