This is just a technique question.

I've got a threaded flange that someone put a 1.5" short nipple on it. The kind that's all threads.

Is there a good way to remove that without damaging the threads?

If I didn't care to preserve the nipple, I would just put a pipe wrench on it and take it out...but it's a rental unit and I don't want to break their stuff.

Appreciate the help.

Grab the nipple as close to the center as possible.

Alternatively, there are i.d. wrenches for pipe that can be purchased. These can screw up the i.d. flow surface, however.

You get to choose which side you want buggered up the least.

Google "inside pipe wrench".

Probably pretty difficult to double nut an NPT nipple.

How about thread a bushing on, vice grip from ID of pipe to OD on a flat of the bushing

Plan B: Pipe wrench it out and find a replacement nipple

I'm going with plan B. It's in my way and it's getting pipe wrenched. thanks guys

Plug the bore of the nipple with a round bar before applying the pipe wrench.

I just mcmastered them a new pipe nipple. It was in the way of me setting up the new vacuum line, and I wasn't going to put a coupling on it and just make it even more of a bump hazard.
