Removing sludgey buildup inside a compressor bundle 2

Any recommendations for cleaning a compressor bundle that has a sticky, heavy layer of film build-up inside that is causing unbalance symptoms? It's not a parafin based substance as it is like a slushy black toothpaste. I've considered injecting xylene into the suction line upstream of the bundle.

most likely it is oxidized lubricant - and thus still paraffin based. removing it with xylene is most likely possible.

you also should check how it got there. if it got there due to faulty seals you better change the seals to prevent it from reoccurring.

I would suggest that you capture a sample of the material and have it tested so you know exactly what it is. You can test the sample for solubility in xylene or other solvents. Romke is correct. Understanding where it came from and preventing it from coming back is probably more important that simply flushing it out.
