Reorder Parts in an Assembly (New to NX)

How do you manually reorder the items in an assembly? And how do you reorder it in the BOM on a drawing, if it's not as you would like. I am using NX6. I am a long time I-deas user so it's a bit a change.

OK, the order in which you see components listed in the Assembly Navigator when it's first opened is not based on firm rules nor do you have any control over it since it's more the result of the order in which the parts actually were opened when the assembly was opened, which could change each time based on where in the search list a part was found as well as perhaps some of the parts were already open, etc. However, once open, you can perform 'sorts' based on the values of the various columns similar to the columns in an explorer window. So you could alphabetical and reverse-alphabetical sorts on the Components names, Reference Set names, the values of the part Weights, and so on depending on which columns displayed in the Assembly Navigator. And you can even get it to MATCH the Drawing Parts List by enabling the 'Callout' column and sorting on it.

As for the Parts List, unless you manually resort or cut & paste entries, once a Parts List note is created it will remain fixed (now this can be overridden by setting the 'Sort on Update' option in the 'Style' dialog for the overall note itself, but by default this option is OFF). If you wish to resort the Parts List note manually, again you can sort on any column you wish by selecting the overall note and with MB3 select the Sort... item.

For makers of tooling drawings or weldments some people will struggle with parts lists trying to get the item number using "callout" for the ballooning method to stay fixed in line with the component number.

That is to say that the drawing has one number say A123 and each of the details are numbered A123-1, A123-2 etc. So if you have 5 items and delete number 3 then the remaining item numbers using the automatic callout would be numbered 1,2,3,4 when you really need to have 1,2,4,5 for historical reasons. In this case we edit the callout numbers in the parts list table to get it to work.

This may not be you but in combination with John's earlier post you can probably handle even the most complex of cases.
