Replace a PRT with a ASM in a drawing

I have a drawing that was detailed from a SLDPRT file. I am adding some PEM studs and nuts to it, but I'd like to save the extensive dimensioning I've done on it, and don't want a second "assembly level" drawing. Using conventional methods (Changing the reference file while opening drawing), Solidworks won't allow a replacement of a part reference with an assembly reference file.

Anybody got a trick for this so I won't have to redimension a new drawing?

You can make the assembly and bring it into the drawing and hold the shift key and drag each dim over to the new view. I don't know if they will take but it may be worth a try. once completed you can delete the part and keep the assmembly.

Interesting, creative idea. I tried it and couldn't get any dimensions to come across.

I think I've submitted this issue as an enhancement request before but I think I'll do it again.

About all that's left then is to create a stud and a nut ïn place"in your part file as a new configuration. That way all of your previous detailing remains in place.

I forgot to mention that you need to make a copy of your existing drawing file to and reference it to your new configuration.

I've used that approach before with PEM nuts and it seemed to work okay. I guess I'll have to try that with the stud.
