Hi Friends,

I have got an opportunity to analyse an existing industrial structure and replace the existing 150 mm thick concrete panels with steel column.

The reason is that the client need a bigger opening in concrete panels to move the machineries.

The scenario at the connection with concrete panels is like this.

UB530 x 32 KG Rafter is connected with concrete panels with 125 x 125 x12 EA Bracket

Also UB530 x 32 KG is connected with 250UB x 37 kg by 10 mm end plate stiffener 4- M20 bolts on 70 x 80 crs and access through panels is provided.

This means that the main member 530UB is only connected with the panel.

Now Eaves (180 x 75 PFC) are connected to Rafter with 130 x 10 Gusset plate with a weld. Also 2 M20 HS bolts is used to connect it from the top of the eaves.

Eaves are also connected with panels at 1.2 m c/c with 90 x 10 x 120 fms site weld which is connected to the eaves with shop weld. Inside the panel, 75 x 10 x 130 plate is already tied to the Y12 reinforcement in the wall and eaves are connected with this plate.

NOW THE QUESTION

Is it possible to expand the 3 m x 2.6 m opening to 5.5 m x 4.6 m

Also, is it possible to replace the panels by steel columns and a beams?

Is there any other suggestion for this issue.

I'm fairly slow, can i get a sketch?

Arguing with an engineer is like wrestling with a pig in mud. After a while you realize that they like it

Firstly, get your member sizes right. A 530UB32 would be very skinny. I think you mean 530UB82.

Next, you need to give us some more information about the building, e.g. length and width, bay size, height. I take it the 250UB37 members are rafters for a cantilevered awning.

How extensive are the proposed modifications? Just one bay or many?

Thanks for your replies. I am currently working out the drawings in AutoCAD. I will be able to upload the file tomorrow..

Mike,

It sound to me like you are asking us to design it for you!

It is quite a simple concept with a number of solutions if you think it through.

Just remember to check the overall stability of the building and the uplift with the panels taken out.

Thnaks for your assistance.. I just wanted to make sure if I am going in right direction or not.

Thanks again
