Replacement of Deck Joints

Hi guys,

I have recently designed a highway bridge for my state DOT (Department of Transportation). They have asked me to provide a specification for the replacement of deck joints and being a relative new-comer to highway design, I am unaware on how deck joints are replaced.

My detail is as follows:

I have a prestressed box girder supported on a rubber bearing with a reinforced concrete deck and asphalt pavement overlay. There is a bolt that runs through the girder and holds down to the pier crosshead. There is a closed cell polyethylene between the girder and the r/c deck slab at the pour strip located over deck joints.

Does anyone have experience in highway bridge design and know of any handy references that I can source? Any help will be appreciated.

If you need a spec: Below is link is to NYSDOT specifications. Joint repair is not a standard spec you'll need to scroll down to "Special Specifications";they have both English & Metric; you might have to look through both; on the next page click "500 Series Specs" then on the next page look at anything that starts with "567". unfortunately they don't list special items by name; you have to hunt for what you need.

I am a little confused by the terminology. What is meant by saying 'resealing bridge deck joints'

Reasealing would mean removing the existing filer material such as a compression seal, closed cell foam, etc, then installing a new seal. NYSDOT Special Specs start out as unique item for a specific project that's not covered in the standard specs. However, rather than reinventing the wheel, we often try to re-use special specs rather than writing new ones.

I found some plan sheets for joint rehab - they're for steel bridges because there's not much p/s concrete here - if you think they'd be of use I'll post them.

Thanks for your help. Going by the NYSDOT website, I have some idea on how to write a specification. I am going to put it to my local authority that they should have a standard specification if the are requesting firms to provide deck joint replacement specifications along with detailed design drawings.

I have attached the expansion joint that I need to write the specification for. Speaking to the manufacturer of this system, there recommendation was to sawcut the joint and 'rip' out the seal.

Would anyone like to comment on this approach?

I've always had very good help from the guys at D.S. Brown. They have some specs, install details and other resources available on thier website for our use. Their Delcrete Strip Seal product looks very similar to the detail you provided.
