Using CATIA V5R18;

I saved a copy of a detailed drawing. Now I would like to replace the component in the saved copy drawing with another component which has similar features, can this be done?

Any response will be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

If you are talking about 2D component, see picture attached. If not, please give us more explanations (are you trying to replace a part or a product in your assembly? - this can be also done).

I want to actually replace the 3D component.

An example;
I design 2 parts exactly the same, but one part has an extra hole in it. Instead of detailing the same information twice, I would like to detail one drawing, then use that drawing as a template (dimensions already created) then add the hole dimensions on my copied drawing to complete the second part.

Use File + NEW FROM and select the first drawing. Save this as the new drawing. Use Edit+Links to replace the Pointed document to point the other 3D part.

Jackk, I tried your suggestion and I’m getting an error “The link refused the document”. Any ideas why?

try it again, but this time open the first drawing and use FILE + SAVE AS to make the copy. Edit+Links and replace should work this time.

(sorry - I always get these two methods confused)

Ferdo, I tried your method & it didn’t work.

Jackk, I tried your method as well & still the same problem.

I posted the link just to see the conclusions coming from IBM support team.

Problem conclusion

*

THIS PROBLEM IS PERMANENT RESTRICTION IN CATIA
Incident Diagnosis
Cannot reinstantiate link via desk window or with
Edit / Links. The message: The link refused the
document is given after selection of the part in
Edit / Links / Replace
Restriction Explanation
It's impossible to replace a link if the new
pointed document has not the same uuids as the old
one.
Uuid is unique universal identifier.
In other words, the reroute can be done with files
that are coming from the Save As only.
By-Pass
There is no by-pass.

Difficult, yes. Impossible, no.

If the file name of the CATPart/CATProduct is the exact name that the CATDrawing is looking for, they will link. Once the link is established, save management will allow you to save to the desired name. This method will even permit the CATDrawing to be pointed from a CATPart to a CATProduct and vice versa by renaming a CATPart (or CATProduct) as a CATProduct (or CATPart) for the transition.
*** This will not maintain the dimension associativity.

As is stated in IBM conclusions:

In other words, the reroute can be done with files
that are coming from the Save As only.

Anyway, I saw something like weavedreamer said but I never succeed to implement, it would be nice if we could have a clear methodology to do this kind of reroute.
