Hello,
I have to replace a 50 year-old bridge. Only the superstructure will be replace (not abutments). Since this is a new bridge I have to use the current code (CAN-CSA S6-06; this is in Ontario, Canada) which requires the bridge to be designed for a CL-625-ONT, which is over three times higher than the load original used for the old bridge. I most likely have the risk that the abutments will not take the new load. Does anyone one if there is any provision that allows for design a new bridge based on the fact that the abutments do not need replacement an therefore they will call for the critical bridge load?
