Replacing components in an assembly

I have an assembly in which I am trying to replace a part with a sub-assembly. I right-click on the component I am trying to replace and select "Reload". In the dialog box that opens up, I select "Replace" and browse to the sub-assembly I want to insert. I get the error: "File name entered was invalid, not found, locked or incompatible type". Why could this be happening?

I double checked the following:

1. The new file is indeed there, i.e it's not missing
2. File name doesn't contain any not-allowed characters.

Thanks for your help.

What version of SW are you using. I believe pre-SW2004 versions could not replace a part with an assembly.

One possible workaround...

Right-click the part in the feature manager tree and create a new subassembly. Then replace the new subassembly with the subassembly of your desiring.

In SW2004 you can replace a part with an assembly. I do it quite often. (Fixing stupid things I did when first starting with SW) Highlight the name in the feature tree, RMB, pick replace component (not reload). When the window comes up you can pick assemblies or parts. You will have to redo all of your mates for the new subassembly.

That's true mncad forgot about that option... but have you tried turning your part into a sub-assembly and maintaining the mates. Then replace an assembly with an assembly? Then maybe you can retain your mates without have to reattach them that away?

Thanks to everyone. I am using SW03 and that may be why the functionality isn't there. But I will be upgrading soon.
