I have a general question regarding lost surfaces from an IGES file or ??? Would I want to begin in GSD and build my bounderies there??? I have a design shop doing design work and sometimes I need to fix surfaces...

There's the healing tool in GSD that can help in closing the small gaps. but if you're missing major surfaces you better off rebuilding them. make sure you maintain the same design intent. (ex Tangency or Curvature continuity)

if you have the original CAD file try using different export formats and methods before investing all that time in building the surfaces.
