I need information in the light of relevant IEC codes that what is the criteria for making an oil pit for an oil filled transformer. To be specific I need to know if an oil pit is required or not for an indoor 1500 kVA 13.8/0.48 kV oil filled transformer?
Thanks.

I beleive this is doing to be highly dependant on your local building, fire, and electrical codes.

I agree with gordonl; this is related also to the authority requirements in the country you are working in.
I had a similar experience in Qatar (Gulf area), where the authority required no oil pit for the 11/ 0.415kV oil filled transformers. Only the floor level of the transformer room is to be filled with aggregate. Any oil leakage from the transformers will go through the aggregate. In other countries they require oil pit for the oil filled transformers.
In France, the common practice is to construct a u shape oil pit around the transformers.
In Saudi Arabia, the authority (scico) requires a rectangular shape oil pit below the oil filled transformers.
In Angola, they require the same as in Saudi Arabia.
In case you have more than one transformer you may need to construct dedicated oil pit for each transformer and a collecting oil pit for the whole number of transformers and this to be constructed outside the transformer room.

Yes, according to NEC Article 450 for any building and/ or indoor installations (assuming NEC applies).

Thanks every one..
Can I have any IEC refernece for that?
The plant location is Saudi Arabia.
The major concern is the power rating of transformer .... that for such a low capacity, is oil pit generally required or not?
Thanks

In Saudi Arabia, The electrical authority requires oil pit for such capacity (1500kVA) and even smaller capacity (They have a sandard transformer room.
They also accept both rectangual and U shape oil pits.
You can send me your e-mail and i will send you typical detail for the transformer room as well as section in the oil pit that are stanadrds in Saudi Arabia.
