Dear All,

Please clarify me whether the PWHT(Post Weld Heat treatment) is required to be done for welding a 25mm thick plate to a hanger rod of dia 80mm which is at the temperature of around 400 deg. carrying a load of 10 tons.

Also please let me know in which code these requirements are mentioned.

thanks

Impossible to answer because we are not mind readers -

1. What are the materials of construction? Not just carbon steel or alloy steel, the composition of the materials or material specification are required.
2. What is the application for service?
3. What are the weld attachment details?

Usually, welds would follow a qualified weld procedure and be performed in accordance with some welding code, and that procedure and code would dictate if PWHT were required. That could be various sections of the ASME code, could be the Structural Welding Code, could be various other US or foreign codes.

sorry, i didn't know much about PWHT REQUIREMENTS,
Actually we want to weld a a36 material plate with sa105 material rod.using a full penetration bevel weld .
it is used for non-pressure part structural load carrying purpose.

For this material thickness and application, I would perform PWHT at 1100-1150 deg F for 1 hour, slow cool. Welding should be performed with 200 deg F preheat.

There are thousadns of manway davit, which is supported by a carbon steel clip welded to the flange. The clip can be as thick as you want, depending on the load. This is similar to your case, and we follow code Table UCS-56. We use full penetration weld, so if the total clip thickness below 1.25", no heat treatment. In your case, you do not need PWHT.

No PWHT is required. Only preheat is neccesary: please see AWS D1.1
