Residential vs. Standard Coverage Sprinklers - Ceiling Mounted Obstructions

Are ceiling mounted obstructions such as light fixtures and exit signs treated differently when using residential vs. standard coverage sprinklers? For example, I heard that in hallways of 13R buildings it is better to design using standard coverage sprinklers as opposed to residential sprinklers to relax obstruction requirements.
