Resources for basic information on structural phases

Hello,
I am currently doing an Msc. in Marine Engineering, and have no background in metallurgy. As my thesis is on corrosion in Nickel Aluminium Bronze valves, I am touching in to metallurgy, and would like to get some basic knowledge. I am looking for information on structural phases in metals. In all the literature I have come a cross, (some very introductory stuff) whenever phases are mentioned, it is in connection to the phase diagrams, explaining what phases to expect at different temperatures and cooling rates etc, and the description of the phases itself is assumed already known. But what I can not find anywhere (and believe me Google is my friend), is what describes the alpha phase, or the gamma1 or gamma2 and so on. In the valves I am studying, the gamma2 phase is unwanted, as it reduces corrosion resistance, but as I don´t know anything about this phase, it is hard to move on, and definitely hard to find it.
Could anyone point me in the direction of resources on the basic description of the different phases?

There are some good books that cover the specific metallurgy of Al and NiAl brass and bronze alloys.
Start with copper.org and go from there.

The Technology of Metallurgy by Dalton is a good starter book and was one of my first college texts.

Thank you for that link EdStainless, that was a very informative site, and it will definitely come in handy for this project. I could not find any basic description of the phases though, even though they were mentioned in several places.
To metengr, yeah, that is what I thought, but I am not very impressed with the support from the university so far. I have a meeting with my supervisor today, hopefully, I can get better answers then.
