Hi,

Is there such thing as a restoration of an age flooded Nicad gen set battery to make it perform as NEW (or at least hang on to it for longer) OR is it better to replace with new flooded lead acid battery since the cost is low. The application is to startup emergency gen set power for crucial business operation when the utility power is down. UPS will be supporting business when utility power is down and the gen set will take over once it is up to speed to take over from the UPS.

NiCd aircraft batteries can be rebuilt, by disassembly and repeated deep cycling and testing of individual cells. Talk to your battery supplier about something similar for your setup.

NiCds were chosen for your service because of its critical nature, probably with consideration of a lot of business factors including cost. A different battery chemistry might be appropriate today if any of those factors have changed... but, no offense intended, you may not rank high enough to be making that decision.
